Benefits and beneficiaries

Benefits

The benefits fall into two broad categories:

1. New scientific understanding of health impacts and high-risk groups associated with climate action regarding extreme heat in vulnerable settings. HEARTH will generate evidence for key public health policies including UKHSA’s new 10-year science strategy for health security.

2. Co-created support for policymaking, implementation and evaluation of climate strategies. A toolkit for policymakers will aid decision-making on climate change adaptation and mitigation and prioritise strategies that are effective, equitable, and deliverable at-scale.

Beneficiaries

Decision-makers at local/national level

The Hub will address key national climate change adaptation policies, including the fourth
Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA4), the Third National Adaptation Programme (NAP3), the Carbon Budget, and local authority strategies on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Partner organisations

Key stakeholders include the Care Quality Commission, industry and professional organisations (CIBSE, ARUP), the Climate Change Committee, and local authorities for low carbon interventions.

Wider public

HEARTH will engage with IPCC, WHO, WMO, Lancet Countdown, The Global Climate and Health Alliance to support the development of sustainable and equitable policies and practices to mitigate and adapt to climate change globally.

Researchers

We will develop research capacity between the different science communities, including training courses and short-term early career researcher placements. A data platform hosting linked climate, health and socio-economic datasets will be developed as a resource for researchers.
