The first Care Settings Working Group (CSWG), chaired by Professor Mike Davies, took place on 25 March 2026. The session introduced the CSWG and clarified its Terms of Reference and membership, reviewed the HEARTH Theory of Change for care settings, and provided an overview of ongoing projects, including ClimaCare, ARCADE, HEARTH, and THERM-UK. The workshop also outlined planned research in care settings, ensuring alignment between current initiatives and future study objectives.

Key discussion points from the CSWG meeting included:

  • Overheating in care settings poses significant risks to both residents and staff.

  • Improvements in thermal comfort must consider indoor air quality alongside safety and ethical considerations.

  • Resident involvement and co-production are crucial for achieving meaningful outcomes.

  • Interdisciplinary approaches, including monitoring, modelling and health impact assessment, enhance the effectiveness of interventions.

  • Stakeholder collaboration and real-world case studies are essential to ensure practical relevance.

  • Funding, implementation and scalability remain major challenges for adaptation strategies.
